About our farm
Coral Sense is a different kind of marine farming facility. Everything we do is
about promoting captive reef keeping by bringing local hobbyists, farmers, breeders
and stores together with three basic goals:
- Encourage captive farming and breeding.
- Reduce wild harvesting.
- Educate reef keepers of all levels in responsible, informed reefing.
Put another way, we believe there are three responsibilities each reef keeper has
to tender for the privilege of having a captive reef in his or her home or office.
These responsibilities are first to understand and practice the appropriate care
for the corals and fish we keep, second to pass on what we have gained through captive
coral and fish propagation and finally, to encourage these practices in fellow reef
keepers by sharing your knowledge and these three sentiments.
To do our part, we strive to aquire our corals and fish from local fish stores where
we are able to view first hand the quality of the animal. When we do purchase from
online "dealers" for rare or rarely local species, we selectively choose "dealers"
who demonstrate a practice of responsible wild harvesting—harvesting in such
a way the natural reefs may be sustainable.
Our Conservation Statement
There are scientific studies indicating the natural reefs could all be gone within
the next fifty years. Possibly due to the symptoms and effects of global warming,
irresponsible harvesting and poorly managed agricultural activities may also contribute
to the declining health of these beautiful, living systems. We discourage these
practices and do what we can to avoid supporting individuals and companies who do
not share this philosophy.
Regardless your conservation and environmental views, it is difficult to argue captive
reef keepers do not have a special ethic that should be followed. We do not pretend
to know what this ethic is, just that responsibile, informed reefing will help each
of us make this hobby a success.
